Clarkson explained: "I said to the Hawkstone team that we should get into racing, but clearly they got motor racing and horse racing confused. That said, Ben Pauling is a stone's throw from Diddly Squat Farm and the Hawkstone Brewery, so I know where my hay is going and the Pauling family originally farmed our land and taught Kaleb everything he knows about farming".

Not the racer Jeremy was expecting...

The Hawkstonian is an unraced, 4yo gelding in training with Ben Pauling. He was bought at the 2023 Goffs Arkle sale for €45,000 by Highflyer Bloodstock and Ben himself. He’s a horse that really stood out at the sales and for good reason.

Jukebox Jury was a nine-time winner, seven of which came at Group level. He ran for four seasons, earning a total of £857,187 across his career. He has since become a leading dual-purpose sire at stud, producing the likes of Princess Zoe, a seven-time winner including the G1 Prix du Cadran, Farclas, who won the G1 Triumph Hurdle and Il Etait Temps, winner of the 2024 Irish Arkle G1.

The Hawkstonian’s dam, Wicked Maria has had nine foals. Six of those have run so far, resulting in three winners of nine races. Her progeny include Bob Heart, who is a five time winner on the Flat and a dual winner over obstacles, along with Wolf In The Desert who won on debut.

She is a daughter of Daylami, a winner of 11 races and over £2,264,164 in prize money earnings. Seven of his wins came at the highest level across four countries, including in the Eclipse Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes and Breeders Cup Turf which earned him the title of Cartier Horse of the Year and rated as the world’s best racehorse of 1999 alongside Montjeu.

He is the sire of Classic winner Grey Swallow, successful in the Irish Derby G1 as well as several Group winners. As a dam’s sire, he is also responsible for a number of Group winners, who now stand at stud themselves. Over jumps he is the grandsire of various Grade race winning performers.

Wicked Maria is out of Moy Water, who has produced five individual winners, including the black-type performer Mona Em.

Ben was thrilled to secure The Hawkstonian at the sales and has been delighted with him since. He told us: “You only have to look at this fella’s makeup and physique to see that he’s a big, bold type” and that… “He’s a very very able jumper: very fast, very accurate, but I undoubtedly see him as a chaser of the future. We’ll have a lot of fun on the way there though.”

The Hawkstonian is a horse that looks to have the natural ability and physique to go and run at the back end of this season but if the team feel he needs a bit more time, he will go out for the Summer and come back to run in a NH Flat race before going novice hurdling.

Ben Pauling trains from Naunton Downs Stables, which is a state-of-the-art purpose built 94 box yard, designed with horse welfare in mind. Ben’s best season came last year, when he achieved 80 winners for a strike rate of 19%. He is on track to beat his highest season’s earnings this year too, so far reaching over £1,148,000. In 2015, the team got their first Grade 1 success with Barters Hill in the Challow Novices’ Hurdle. It wasn’t long until Willoughby Court doubled the tally in the Neptune Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. He has since had three more Festival winners in Le Breuil, Global Citizen and Shakem Up’Arry in the 2024 Plate Handicap Chase for owner Harry Redknapp. Other prominent owners in his yard include David Howden and Tim Radford.
