Introducing: Paddy De Pole

Introducing Paddy De Pole, a smart 5-year-old gelding, now in training with Paul Nicholls.
Paddy De Pole has quite a speedy look to his pedigree. He is sired by Alkaadhem, whose progeny include 2022 Grand Annual winner, Global Citizen, and Listed mares’ novices’ hurdle winner, The Organist,,,.

His dam, Squirrel Wood, was a Flat horse by super-sire, Saddler’s Wells. She too proved to be a speedy type who found success in the latter part of her career over trips of around a mile.

Paddy De Pole was handpicked by Mick Fitzgerald, who described him as “a ball of energy”, adding that “he’s a little demon and he’s a proper little tank and he’s made of some pretty stern stuff this fella. I really like him.”

Paddy De Pole has plenty of Point-to-Point experience. He had a tough time in the early part of his career; falling twice and unseating once but has since strengthened his form significantly.

In his most recent outing, Paddy De Pole came up against stiff competition at Belharbour where he faced not one but two previous winners. Not only did Paddy De Pole win that race, he won it by a 15 length margin!

To add further strength to his form: the horse he beat into second, Desert Cave, finished runner up again in his next outing, while Aghmorough Bridge, who he beat into third, has since won twice.

You can see why Mick is excited about this one…

Paul Nicholls is looking forward to getting going with this lad, informing us that… ‘he’s a Point-to-Point winner, that can be the start of anything with any horse really’ and that ‘what we’ve done so far – he goes nicely and we can see how he develops over the next few months. I’m sure he’s going to improve and turn into a nice staying novice hurdler next season.’

Paul feels it is in Paddy De Pole’s best interests to wait until next season before getting him on course. So, the plan will be to bring him back and start nice and fresh at the beginning of July with a view to sending him novice hurdling early in the autumn.

We, along with Mick, are very much looking forward to watching Paddy De Pole’s progress with the 13-time Champion Trainer.

Since the Mick Fitzgerald Racing Club had its first runner in 2012, ten horses have raced in our red and yellow silks. Between them, they have won 23 races with a strike rate of 23% and have brought home almost £250,000 in prize money. Only three of their horses have failed to win a race. Four have achieved Official Ratings of more than 135 and they have had runners at the Cheltenham Festival and in the Grand National.

Mick Fitzgerald is a retired (Irish) jump jockey, who successfully rode over 1,300 winners over a 15-year period.  Talent spotted by Nicky Henderson, Mick’s retained role as stable jockey at Seven Barrows lasted until the end of his riding career.

Big winners include the Grand National on Rough Quest in 1996 and the Cheltenham Gold Cup on See More Business in 1999.  A unique relationship with trainer Paul Nicholls, alongside his retainer, saw Mick rewarded with leading jockey title at The Festival in 1999 and 2000.

A share of prize money

100% of prize money won by a horse is shared between owners. If there are 1250 shares and the horse wins,,, £10,000 then each share earns £8. Prize money is distributed to owners at the end of the syndicate term.

Nothing extra to pay

The £60 cost of a share includes everything. You will not be asked for any further payment. At the end,,,
the term owners are given the option to renew. Renewals cost an estimated £40 and the amount is smaller than the original payment because the latter included a proportion of the purchase price of the horse, an expense only payable once.

Weekly updates

All owners receive an email every Saturday afternoon. This includes a report, usually filmed, from the,,,
trainer and stable staff. and all relevant news and anecdotes. The content, which includes free tips and articles, is exclusive to owners.
We also send one-off emails whenever there is something to say – a declaration, for example, or an injury update.
On the morning of a race we dispatch expert analysis of the contest, a realistic assessment of our horse’s chance, plus comments on betting trends and a breakdown of other races on the card.

Old Gold Racing has a growing community of owners, currently housed in our Facebook Groups,,,
